September Announcement

A major phenomenon of the internet age has been the development of the potent online search engines and their ability to ferret out all kinds of information from the bowels of the 'net. The big ones, like MSN, Yahoo and Google, are enormous investments with incredible potential. But, most of us do not get full use from it. So, this month, member Al Gottlieb will expand our knowledge of the market leader: GOOGLE!. Come out and get some new skills (see p.4 for a bit of info about Al's experience).

After a break John M, again, in the Advanced session, will tackle one of the major developing tools for Windows users. This utility, called BartPE (for Bart Pre-installed Environment) allows you to tackle really disabled PCs and have a raft of tools available even when the PC is totally non-bootable. Come learn about making and using this amazing bit of technology! [EJV]

August Announcement

Bring your questions & problems for the chance to get it tackled by our dedicated attendees!

The lead item below has some more discussion of the Windows Genuine Advantage program from Microsoft. If you got it installed, either intentionally, or not, it may be possible to remove it, should you so desire. John M will show a tool (on our demo) that can be helpful.

Last time, we did not get to the reserve topic of "portable applications", programs that you can carry with you on a flash drive. Since then I've learned of a totally different portable technology, well developed with not much PR so far. I plan to demo not only the "Portable Apps Suite" approach, but also the new technique, called "U3 Launchpad". How to better use that big, new flash drive of yours!

After a break John M, in the Advanced session, will demo the Linux firmware updates for our Linksys Wireless router, that we canceled at our last advanced session. [EJV]

June Announcement

We won't neglect those questions and problems; so bring them along for every attendee's chance to get theirs tackled by the 'experts'.

As mentioned later, we plan to have a quick rerun of the VMware Player demo - to show just how well Win 98 can run on your Win XP box

Then, Emil V will take the stage to show off a truly powerful aid to setting up, protecting and recovering your PC. It is the Acronis Bootable Rescue disk that combines the "True Image 9" backup program, the "Disk Director" partition utility and the "OS Selector". Come see!

Time permitting, John M will show off the Microsoft Recovery Console you may have heard of but never seen on your Windows CD.

After a break, in the Advanced session, Pete W will take up a demo of a Linux box running the VMware Player and Windows OS. [EJV]

May Announcemnet

Gather those questions and problems, bring your cohorts and have a go round the table for every attendee's chance to get their interest or need addressed. Hopefully, our turn out will be good.

Building on the advanced demo of last month, Pete W will show the whole group an intro to virtual machines - or running more than one operating system at the same time. It's not booting into one or the other - or one emulating the other. It is potentially the technology of the future for dealing with archival data, programs and operating systems. Would you like to experiment with Linux, but can't run your Quicken stuff? Then running a Windows virtual machine on that Linux box might be your solution! Come see this demo and find out!!!

After our roughly noon break, the Advanced session, a bit undecided at this writing; will likely take up another virtual machine aspect - possibly with a linux-based OS. [EJV]

April Announcement

We have a very special treat for all attendees. Our long time Villanova sponsor, Prof. Frank Maloney, will be our presenter! He has not appeared for one of our meetings in lo these many years. But, folks who've been around for a while will recall how informative and enjoyable each of his talks has been. Mark your calendars!

We will have Q & A, probably a bit shortened. Then, Prof. Maloney will take over to cover two very contemporary topics: firstly, SKYPE, internet telephoning, then SLINGBOX, an internet entertainment tool.

After our roughly noon break, the Advanced session will take up Part 2 of the "VMware & VM Player" topic. For Part 2, presenter, Pete W will concentrate on how to manage the installation of the VM Player software and how to install the VMs (the Virtual Machines, or virtual computers).

March Announcement

Let's hope the weather pans out a bit better for us this month - leading to a really good turnout for the meeting!

Following the Q & A, we'll get into a topic that is the reason I'm hoping for that good turnout. The subject is one that all of us (including yours truly) could do better with:

"Organizing and Protecting Personal Files" By 'personal', I mean files that YOU create, or are created at your direction. Most of us (should be all of us) have the capability to reinstall their OS or have the CDs, or downloads, to reinstall our programs. But, there is no ready, comes-with-your computer, way to deal with your own stuff. Hope you all come! [EJV]

After our roughly noon break, the Advanced topic session will be tackling the subject of 'virtual machines' and the software "VMware". Presenter will be Pete Whinnery.

Feb Announcement

Turnout was a bit low for January, but perhaps we can blame the weather. Hopefully it does not represent a trend!
<p>
Following the Q & A, we'll get some insight into "Web Page Design" by our webmaster, Pete Whinnery.(building on the web page hosting demo by John Murphy last month). This is intended for folks who are just getting started on web page making - not already experts! Pete plans to cover the following subtopics:
